Two Sides to Every Story

Whether it is a Tata Indica, a Maruti Alto, or the new Nano, the car is a symbol of the rising middle classes in India and the booming economy that will allow more people to own cars. Debates wage worldwide over new strategies for hybrid vehicles and cleaner emissions, but the fact remains that cars are still a luxury commodity for the vast majority of the world’s population.

This work was created during a one-month sculpture symposium sponsored by the Harmony Art Foundation in Navi Mumbai, India. This work is the property of the Harmony Art Foundation.

Detail of sugar and detail of bamboo structure.

After the residency in Mumbai, images of this car sculpture were used in the design of a billboard project installed in Bangalore. The images along the bottom of the design illustrate the fabrication process as well as details of the car.

This billboard was installed for one month on a busy street in Bangalore next to an auto repair shop.
This was documented from the backside of the street, on the other side of the wall. Behind this wall, there was an auto scrap yard as part of a car and auto rickshaw repair business.
