Sugar on exterior wall, 106cm × 76cm (42” × 30”)

The People’s Car

This piece was created during a 3-week residency at the Kashi Art Residency in Kochi. It is an outdoor sugar installation, depicting the highly controversial, widely publicized “world’s cheapest car”, the Tata Nano. This 1 Lakh rupee car (approx. $2500US) was launched during the time the artist was in India. The piece is titled The People’s Car, which is what the Nano has often been referred to in the Indian media. The sugar rendition of this seemingly “utopian” consumer object has the pop appeal of a shiny new object in the beginning, but is gradually corrupted from the weathering of the rains.
