All good things must come to an end

Since this mural is made entirely of sugar, and it was installed on an outdoor wall, it was very temporary.  Here is the process of its erosion along with details of the sugar tiles at various stages of its demise.  Click on the image if you would like to see it enlarged.

Saccharum BA

I am part of a group exhibition called “Saccharum BA” in Salvador, Brazil which opens June 15, 2009. This show, comprising contemporary and modern art, as well as artifacts that all pertain to sugar and it’s history, is at the Museum of Modern Art of Bahia. I’ll be exhibiting 3 large photos of the previous sugar installation (The Wealth of Some and the Ruin of Others) as well as producing a new sugar tile mural at the Museum. This image is a design of what my new mural will depict. It will be approx. 160cm x 210cm. The grid overlay represents the tile grid (each tile: 17cm square).

The Wealth of Some and the Ruin of Others

This project took place in Salvador, Brazil in November - December, 2008 . It’s an outdoor sugar tile mural installed on a public city wall. The style is referential to traditional ceramic tile murals called azulejos.  The image below is the mural on the day it was installed, before it began to wash away.  It lasted for about 4 weeks in total.
